SHERMAN'S LAGOON

Sherman is a great white shark who is uniquely unaware of how intimidating he can be. He is the main character in SHERMAN'S LAGOON set somewhere in the tropical seas and inhabited by  a cast of unique characters. Sherman gets pushed around a bit by these other characters including Hawthorne, a hermit crab, Fillmore the sea turtle, and Megan, Sherman's domineering wife, another great white shark. The characters in Sherman's lagoon lead lives an awful lot like middle class Americans. They try new business ventures, go on dates, have family issues. But they also have problems unique to life in the lagoon, like what to bring to a covered dish party; shrimp...will shrimp be there?

 There is also an ocean environmental aspect to the cartoons. Ocean environmental themes are explored in a humorous non political way. The Cartoons appeal to adults who relish the social commentary and by children particularly pre teens and teens who enjoy the rough and tumble of Sherman's undersea world.

 The crew here at American Admiralty Books are fans of Sherman and the inhabitants of his lagoon. We think many of our visitors would enjoy periodic visits to the lagoon. So we will run the links here alternatively with our home grown "SUNDAY FUNNIES" and the links will have a permanent home in our OCEANOGRAPHY SECTION.

Needless to say we here at American Admiralty Books are very pleased with this development as is Vic's old pal Namazu. Vic's mentor and friend the late Rear Admiral "Mac" Showers was quite impressed with the eleven ladies who first lived the experience in the mid 1950s and then produced the book. For the time being we are going to carry it in our 'NAVAL INTEREST" section but may cross list it in other sections as well. The Great Namazu will hold forth on the work in the very near future.

Today is also the 45 Anniversary of what was once the worst peace time loss of Coast Guard crew men in the history of the service.

Unfortunately the loss of 17 crewmen would be exceeded before the 20th century was over in the loss of the CGC BLACK THORN.  The WHITE ALDER sank on the lower Mississippi River just above New Orleans when it was cut in half by the Freighter HELENA registered in Taiwan on December 7, 1968.
 The CGC WHITE ALDER is pictured left in an official USCG photo. Oddly this photo was taken about a year prior to the loss of the CGC WHITE ALDER while she was attempting to salvage the sunken CGC LOGANBERRY, a smaller buoy tender/aids to navigation cutter that sank in rough weather after striking an uncharted submerged object. Our own Johnas Presbyter was there for the LOGAN BERRY mission in charge of a smaller responding Coast Guard vessel.  In 1980 a larger Coast Guard Buoy tender the CGC BLACK THORN was sunk after a collision in Tampa Bay with a loss of 23 Coast Guard crew members.  http://www.uscg.mil/history/webcutters/Blackthorn1944.pdf   The Loss of the BLACK THORN now stands as the Coast Guard's largest single day loss of personnel in peace time.

 Between the two Buoy tender losses the service lost a training vessel.  The CGC CUYAHOGA was sunk in a collision on the Chesapeake Bay on October 20, 1978. To put the Coast Guard peace time losses in perspective that started on December 7, 1968 consider that each of these losses of 17, then 10, then 23 members occurred in a single day in a service smaller than the New York city police department at the time. 

 The Coast Guard was present at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941:
 The CGC TANEY was present at Pearl Harbor and returned fire. The TANEY survived the rest of the war as well and now is a museum ship in Baltimore harbor. In addition to the Taney at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 were the unarmed 190 foot buoy tender the CGC KUKUI, Two 125 foot armed cutters the RELIANCE and the TIGER. The CGC TIGER was outside the harbor at the time of the attack and was subjected to fire from Japanese air craft which signaled its immediate change of course to its war time predesignated station as the outer harbor entrance patrol vessel, the station from which it rode out the rest of the attack. The actions of the CGC RELIANCE were not posted to the official Coast Guard website on the USCG at Pearl Harbor, nor were those of most of the several smaller numbered vessels ( generally the Coast Guard does not name vessels under 65 feet) with the exception of CG-8 which was under aerial attack, was underway in the harbor and participated in an evacuation of unarmed personnel from a harbor facility and other search and rescue duties during and after the attack. In one of the little know actions of the Pearl harbor attack nearly 1,000 miles away at Midway Japanese destroyers shelled the harbor in the hopes of destroying any naval vessels present. Among the few present was the Coast Guard buoy tender WALNUT which was unarmed. The shells of the Japanese destroyer all fell short of the WALNUT which got under way after the shelling stopped and made a bee line for Pearl Harbor arriving a few days later. At Pearl Harbor the WALNUT was promptly armed.

As we continue to monitor the transgressions of the Chinese Navy and Coast Guard  ( and recently air forces) towards their neighbors Japan and the Philippines, December 7th seems a good time to pause and remember that Japanese and American naval forces are still vulnerable to surprise attack at places like Guam where China recently moved shore base missiles on their mainland to within range of Guam. Both U.S. and Japanese forces are vulnerable to sneak attack at Yokosuka and it is publicly stated Chinese national policy to drive the United States Navy back to Pearl Harbor. It is the Coast Guard forces of both Japan and China that mostly confront each other over the disputed islands at the moment. Both sides have emphasized Coast Guard forces in the hopes that their police like nature will enhance legal claims of "effective administration" and save face over any confrontations that look like backing down. Unfortunately China has a poor legal case and no right what so ever to be invading the relevant sea and air spaces. With the recent establishment of an aerial defense zone over the disputed islands by China , air force to air force confrontations are going to occur. December 7, 2014 finds us in a situation all too similar to 1941. In the blink of an eye the distinction between Coast Guard and naval forces can be lost for the duration of a long and costly war. Lets hope the Dragon finally awakens to common sense and the rule of international law. But lets not lull ourselves into the slumber that enveloped Honolulu on December 6, 1941 nor the distraction that the Islamofascists constantly present. It is time to begin building up our naval strength and protecting it.

NASA's Proposed New Airship Competition Good for Science and Maritime Operations. Other Developments in Maritime Lighter Than Air Technology

 Lighter than air ships are capable of operating in the highest reaches of the atmosphere where there is still enough gas density for propulsion systems and control systems to work. Since being lighter than air eliminates lift as a requirement the upper reaches of lighter than air flight are pretty close to the edge of space. We're talking the realm of the visible night sky even in day light above the typical heights at which fighter aircraft work. Not being dependent on forward motion to generate lift the lighter than air craft has the ability to hoover over one position on the earth, move slowly in coordination with events, and stay on station for highly protracted Periods. Non rigid lighter than air ships are generally rounded in shape and consist very largely of soft material and are thus naturally stealthy. Today that stealth can be technologically enhanced if stealth is desired. Geo Synchronized satellites are able to keep a single area of the earth under continuous surveillance but would be prohibitively expensive to man or to be designed for easy and rapid relocation.

 The lighter than airship able to operate on "the edge of space" makes an excellent atmospheric, or stellar observatory. This is NASA's interest in the modernization of the lighter than air ship. There can be no denial that the same attributes of such air ships as make them excellent science observatories also make them attractive for a variety of naval/military applications. The U.S. Department of Defense is interested in these aerial vehicles as well.

 NASA is preparing to run a design contest for a scientific airship.  We found details at a web site called AMERICA SPACE: (Home page:http://www.americaspace.com/  )

     " The space agency is considering issuing a challenge to various interested communities to design a new airship which could fly at high altitudes and also stay aloft for record periods of time. A request for information has been issued by NASA for the proposed �20-20-20 Airship Challenge.� The total prize purse awarded would be from $1 to $1.5 million dollars, with the competition taking place over the next 3 to 4 years.
�We are seeking to take astronomy and Earth science to new heights by enabling a long-duration, suborbital platform for these kinds of research,� said Jason Rhodes, an astrophysicist at NASA�s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Rhodes is heading the effort for this challenge."

 Obviously, the naval and military communities are highly interested in the further development of lighter than air (LTA) vehicles. Caltech has published a study on the developmental progress, and potential utility of such LTA craft. Below is a quote from their study. 
 "Over the last two decades, there has been wide interest in developing a high altitude, stratospheric lighter-than-air (LTA) airship that could maneuver and remain in a desired geographic position (i.e., "station-keeping") for weeks, months or even years.
Such a stratospheric airship would offer the military surveillance capabilities over large areas. This platform would also provide telecommunication companies a means of providing commercial communication and data services to consumers in remote areas. While stratospheric airships remain a promise rather than a reality today, seeing through the final stages of development of such vehicles operating in the relatively light winds present in the lower stratosphere at altitudes around 65 kft (20 km), would enable unique data collection opportunities for Earth and atmospheric scientists. They would be a gamechanger for space scientists since their costs as a platform would be substantially lower than satellite missions."  To Read the entire study click here: CALTECH LTA STUDY.
 We noted with interest that Caltech felt that LTS stratospheric operations could eventually be achieved, but that upper atmosphere operations of heights up to 20 km above the earth are easily achievable now and offer tremendous opportunities to scientific and naval/military endeavor. Most "high altitude" military and commercial jets operate between 14 km and 22 km. The X-15 has flown to over 67 KM but most heavier than air aircraft that operate between 20 km and 67 km are specialized military or experimental craft. The 20 km altitude is not a terribly crowded air corridor at the moment. There are no rush programs or lavish funding in LTA research and development at the moment but some new LTA vehicles are being fabricated. No real production lines have evolved as yet. However interest is growing and R& D money is increasing. We'll keep an eye on this development especially for our naval aviation readers and report back every now and then

A Brief List of Old, Obscure and Obsolete U.S. Navy Jobs

   


"U.S. Navy enlisted personnel�unlike those in the other services�wear their jobs on their sleeves. A Marine machine-gunner wears similar collar rank as the rest of his fire team; unless you ask him, or see his military occupation in his file, one could never know his job specifics just by looking at his uniform." (From The USNI WEBSITE). The U.S. Navy's non commissioned ("Petty") Officers all must fulfil a specific skilled "rating " aboard ship. Their ranks are spoken of as "Petty Officer Third Class, Petty Officer Second Class, Petty Officer First Class and the three grades of Chief Petty Officer  (Senior , and Master). Ratings are the names of the set of technical skills each contributes to the operation of the ship. Some like "Boatswain's mate" have been around since the age of sail and will probably always be necessary. Other have liife cycles that are dependent on changing ship board technology. "Sailmaker" disappeared well over a century ago. In more recent history the steam related rates like "Boiler Tender" disappeared. Recently the U.S. Naval INstitute posted on its web site a pictorial essay on some of the more colorful  obsolete rates. Below are links to this interesting side bar of naval history.  IS TRAVEL AND COMMUNICATION ACROSS TIME POSSIBLE


 Greetings Bipeds! I read with interest the recent post on FUZZY ALGORITHMS AND THE SEARCH FOR WARP SPEED." Benefiting from 3,000 years of close observation of scientific progress as I do I wanted to elaborate a bit on the subject that underlies that blog post, namely complexity theory, and to comment on a subject that is related to both interplanetary travel and the evolution of the calculus and geometries of complexity, formerly "chaos". That subject is time travel and across time communications. If time space is not malleable then the much desired "warp drive" can't happen. The emerging understanding of "Complexity Theory" and the slow development of complexity calculus and geometries presents strong evidence supported by existing physics and math that the "fabric" of space time is indeed at least somewhat "plastic" and "malleable".

EDITOR's NOTE: Fasten your seatbelts, the Great Catfish is about to take you on a fast trip to edge of the unknown.   Honestly, we don't know where he gets this stuff.   

 When we compare interplanetary space exploration with the early European voyages of global exploration we note the common element of long duration of voyages, often years. In space, unless we can finally travel faster than light ("Warp Speed"), simple voyages within our own local spiral arm of our own galaxy could take centuries. So questions of space travel involve questions of time and that in turn always brings up the question of time travel and communications. As we live our lives strapped to our watches and schedules, with work and play events both scheduled at specific times, and our nations divided into synchronized time zones we experience time as "marching on". Late for work or school, that's usually personally costly. Trains, planes and ships rarely wait on anyone. "Time and tide wait on no man". But before it became a priority to run the railroads on time, time seemed much more localized and malleable to our ancestors as recently as the 18th century. Time is indeed more malleable than we commonly think. Let's take a detailed look at what is presently understood about the malleability of time.

 Is time travel and communication possible? As it turns out if you ask modern physicists that question it has to be broken down into component parts because the answer is not the same for each part. In a nut shell the component questions are: (1) Is communication across time possible? The short answer to that one is yes and in fact it happens quite a lot. (2) Is time travel into the past possible? While there is some theory that supports the possibility as a very rare occurrence, these are just theories and almost impossible to prove. Until the calculus of complexity is fully evolved the most probable answer is a simple no. (3) Is time travel into the future possible? This one gets a qualified "probably" from modern physics. 

 Is communication across time possible? The epiphany of the Iroquois: When the Iroquois first met the Jesuits writing and clocks were the most impressive "magic" that the Jesuits seemed to possess. The Iroquois being possessed of an advanced orally transmitted culture soon observed that the Jesuits could communicate in conversational detail across great distances and time by sending letters and other correspondence. The Iroquois immediately realized that writing , real writing of a live spoken language allowed people who possessed it the ability to send messages to the future and receive messages from the past. The Jesuits wanted the Iroquois to learn to read and write so that they could study the bible and the catechism. The Iroquois wanted to read and write for their own purposes so they valued this particular "gift" of the Jesuits. The Iroquois had learned to measure the passage of time in moon phases and other celestial observations. Their measurements were highly useful in terms of seasons down to about roughly a month. They could of course count days and had computed the approximate length of a year. They were known after contact with the Jesuits to sit for hours watching a clock. The Iroquois were quite aware that the clock measured with precision, more exacting than they had ever known, the passage of time. European and Asian cultures may have advanced far beyond American cultures in the development of writing and measurement of time but it was the Iroquois who excelled at the appreciation that these developments are demonstrations of the malleability of time.

    Have you ever seen a star in the night sky, written a letter , or read a book?  Then you have communicated across time. The light we see from the stars was emitted years, often centuries, even eons before we perceive it. While the star we see today might not even continue to exist the information it transmits is still valuable and available. We use these stars for celestial navigation, and now we study them in our search for planets. We can tell much through spectral analysis about their composition at the time the light was emitted. When we see the stars we are looking at the past. When they emitted the light and its inherent data the stars were projecting into the future. Every time you read an article, paper or book you receive a message from the past. Every time you write a letter, term paper, book, article for publication, post card, recipe, etc. you send a message into the future.

 In American and Italian labs light and micro waves have already been accelerated beyond light speed. Micro waves have been accelerated to 30 times the speed of light and light itself has been accelerated to 200 times the speed of light. Our work with the Helios Ruehls projects has put us in close contact with optical physicists who inform us that light is a packet and so called light speed is now understood to be simply an average of the speed of the packet, with some parts of the packet moving faster that others. Modern physics news flash; there have always been things in the universe, of note presently; elements within the light packet itself that move faster than "light speed" which in fact is an average. Now just because we can move subatomic particles faster than light doesn't mean we can move machines and people, we again have to await the evolution of the calculus and geometries of complexity to know if we can ever practically do that. But we are probably very close to the ability to carry communications including the telemetry for robotic probes at speeds that will virtually eliminate the present time lags between Earth and Mars. Indeed, this future capability will allow us to operate within our spiral arm of the galaxy with telemetry time lags now observable in our control of our robotic probes on Mars and the outer planets of our solar system.  Time is indeed very malleable in terms of communication and becoming more so. Determining the ultimate extent awaits the evolution of the Calculus and Geometries of Complexity.

 So if communications with the past are possible, is time travel into the past possible?  Possible perhaps, but not probable. The major roadblock based on present physical knowledge is the second law of thermodynamics, specifically the the rule for entropy. The so called "disorder" in the universe which increasingly is being seen not as "disorder" but "complexity" is not describable in terms of Newtonian physics, the Theory of Relativity, or what is known so far of Quantum Mechanics; is presently termed "entropy". As the universe matures "entropy" is ever increasing. This is so observable on so many levels that it is presently expressed as a law of physics. However increasingly we are perceiving the spread of "entropy" as the growth of "complexity" over time. We have little in the way of non Euclidean geometries and complexity calculus to describe, predict, and articulate laws for this complexity. But the rule as presently perceived is that entropy increases. The problem with traveling backwards in time is that it would require entropy to decrease which violates the second law of thermodynamics, a "dogma" of present math/physics. However even today using only our humble already available calculus we can perceive, but not prove possible exceptions. There is the possibility made famous through the Star Trek series of the "worm hole". Worm Hole Theory arises out of the Theory of  General Relativity. General Relativity describes gravity not as a force but a manifestation of the curvature of space time. Under this theory matter bends space time around it sort of like a fabric. Theoretically, a very massive star which dies could warp space time around it creating a sort of matter ,light sucking whirl pool that we call a "black hole".  In theory, the black hole could be a connector between two regions of space time. The fact that we can mathematically predict such a possibility in no way means that its exists. For the foreseeable  future we know no way of testing the theory. Based on the best scientific reasoning to date we have to rate travel back in time as a very low probability that would require some very rare, and undiscovered, and with one exception as yet unimagined exceptions to the second law of thermodynamics.  This is probably a good thing in that it is mostly with travel into the past that the nightmares of science fiction relative to time travel are focused. What if you traveled into the past and accidentally killed your own grand father? Travel into the past is no doubt much more potentially problematic and dangerous for us, if we could do it, than travel into the future.

 Is time travel into the future possible? This one gets a qualified "probably" from modern physics. Traveling into the future is possible in theory. When a subatomic particle goes really fast ( especially faster that the average of the light packet aka "light speed") time slows down for it. Consequently for a subatomic particle traveling near light speed ( and we now know that can be exceeded) what was one second for something traveling at even the best rocket speeds today could be minutes for the particle. This has been well observed in the case of a subatomic particle called the "Muon". In the lab the Muon has been observed lasting beyond its normal "life expectancy" (time to decay)  consistently when accelerated to near light speed. In a very real way a high speed Muon lives longer and travels into the future. Time travel into the future doesn't require violation of any of the present laws of thermodynamics. Presently we'd have to rate it within the realm of possibility, Any practical utility seems a long a way off. There is also the question of the wisdom of traveling into the future. Based on the second law of thermodynamics it looks like a one way trip into the unknown.

 The bottom line my biped friends, is that time is clearly malleable which is good news for distant space travel in the future. There is growing evidence that the "fabric of space" is malleable also. But the "warp drive" you seek awaits the evolution of the calculus and geometries of complexity. So those of you who dream of being real space pioneers ...get thee into theoretical mathematics. The first toe in the door of complexity is Fractal Geometry as created by Benoit B. Mandelbrot. Don't just study his math, study his life.  Fractal Geometry, the first crack in the door of complexity is the product of a maverick who did not fit the mould of the academic professional mathematician of his day. To push mankind forward into the distant universe you have to think outside the box of mathematics and physics as they presently exist. But when you get outside that box Mandelbrot indicates that you find your self in simply a far larger box that we call "complexity" and not long ago called "chaos". As big and complex as it is there are discernable rules becoming visible already. We only know at the moment a few of them. We must get into the "outer box'. However be forewarned, when we reach the sides of the bigger box that is "complexity" we might find it rests in an even bigger box that we may as well name now..."WONDER".
