The PELICAN above frequently graces our weekend edition covers. It shares space with other images of designs that the backyard boat builder can build. All come with links to the plans vendor. If you have priced boat building plans you know they are generally not cheap. We have many links to plan vendors in our Boat Building Section. However we are aware that some advanced boat builders don't need all of the details in these commercially available plans. We have been a bit remiss in not describing the plans and manuals available through our sponsor Amazon. But there is a reason why Amazon allows independent portals. We know the subject matter and will try to steer you away from an unsatisfactory purchase, even if it means linking you to vendors from whom we don't receive commissions. If you can get solid information here our readership increases. If you are happy with your purchases from Amazon purchased through our "portal", you will probably shop our portal again. We'd rather lose a sale and insure that you actually obtained the information that you need, then sell you something that won't do. We urge those of you in the market for inexpensive boat building plans to select carefully. The first cover illustration features "50 Wooden Boats", but you have to know your own shop and math skills and should carefully review such books of plans before purchase. Many books of plans present issues of scale the plans in the book may be shrunk down from the original scale if you aren't prepared to deal with that you may want to consider full sized (and priced) plans from plan vendors. Another element that is often problematic in books pf plans is completeness, what you may be getting are more of concept drawings than actually detailed building plans. Basically once you arrive at the "shelf" you will find various titles and minor descriptions that you may click on and go to a more detailed description, in some cases reviews, ISBN numbers, if you want to try a library loan instead, and in some cases a book cover icon where you really can "look inside". We have found Amazon's collection of boat building "How To" manuals useful, rather complete compared with other shop on line sites, but we have not found much in the way of complete building plans but there are some interesting books of plans. We do however recommend that you consider these books of plans carefully unless you are a very skilled and experienced boat wright capable of evolving a boat out of a concept drawing or less than complete plans. Where ever it is offered, and these are the majority of publications on the shelf use the "look inside feature".
