DON'T LET A GOOD BOAT GO BAD!

Plans for this wooden sunfish @ http://guwhaileypc.wordpress.com/2014/01/26/wooden-sunfish-sailboat-randkey/

       FROM JOHNAS PRESBYTER, EDITOR

Just before Hurricane Katrina came through Louisiana and wiped out the marina where I had my sailboat I was pricing the replacement costs for replacing the mahogany cockpit coaming. It came to thousands of dollars on a 30 year old "weekender" that had a fair market value of less than $6,000. So I tried to repair the several areas of rot. Results were, to say the least, unsatisfactory. I did however, dearly love that boat. In retrospect, it was probably for the best that Katrina eliminated the problem for me. But I never forgot the lesson on the economics of  "bright work" wooden features.

During the winters when we return from Annapolis to New Orleans I've been working on the seemingly never ending repairs to our house which recently has included some walnut cabinetry, very similar to the type of cabinetry and joiner work you might see on an old wooden sail boat.  Despite my dissatisfaction with my earlier attempts to repair wood rot I have discovered that the economics of replacement remain unfavorable, but the possibility of real repair is much more satisfactory than in my pre-Katrina world. A protracted visit to a wooden boat show and discussions with skilled restorers led me to a search through our Amazon portal for products. There were a bunch. One that I have now tried ( with enhanced techniques learned from our master boatwright friends ) is linked above. If you are facing a wood repair or restoration project use the image link above and if this isn't the solution there are many more related products in the industrial section usually under "Adhesives".

Remember to wear eye and respiratory protection when working with products like this.
